WHO SHOULD HAVE LESSONS?
We have lessons for:
- non-swimmers of any age (as early as 6 months)
- technique improvement
- fitness training
Anyone can sign up for lessons, even adults and swim team kids! It's never too late (adults!) or to early (infants!) to learn to swim. The earlier you help your child become comfortable in the water, the safer they are. Don't be fooled by thinking if you wait "one more season" that your water-fearful child will become less fearful simply because they are older. In fact, it becomes more and more difficult to overcome those fears the longer you wait (as non-swimming adults can probably attest!) If you have an infant (between the ages of 6 and 35 months) and are interested in a Mommy and Me swim class, please contact one of the instructors.
Also, don't be fooled by thinking that "my child can swim just fine, he/she doesn't need lessons". No one is ever finished learning how to swim-just take a look at Michael Phelps, he takes lessons from his coach every time he gets in the water! But perhaps more importantly, swimming lessons are more than just learning how to swim-we teach you how to be safe. Swimmers will learn and practice basic rescue and safety rules during their lessons. Did you know most drownings occur 1 foot away from the wall of a pool? Even good swimmers may panic in an emergency. When you practice what to do in an emergency, you are much less likely to panic. For e xample... have you ever tried swimming in all of your clothes? It's much different from a bathing suit, but just as likely to be the attire at the time of an emergency.
Limited Members are those who are not members of Key West, but would still like to do swim lessons. Keep this in mind if you are trying to arrange swimming lesson groups! Encourage your non-kwc friends to consider swim lessons which are available with a limited membership.
