DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that drowning claims the lives of over 3000 people every year (National Safety Council), and that drowning is the second leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14? In fact, recent data suggest that especially for children 1-4 years of age, almost 30% of deaths were by drowning, and of those 30%, 39% occurred in recreational pools (Safe Kids USA).

If you didn't realize quite how prevalent drownings are, you are not alone! More than half of parents (55 percent) reported that they do not worry very much or at all about their child drowning, and that most parents felt their children were already adequately supervised, skilled and knowledgeable about water safety. We know from scientific studies that, unfortunately, this is simply not the case. It is up to parents to drill home the message to our youngsters about water safety, and this means constant reminders and practicing safety skills.

KEY WEST AND WATER SAFETY

Key West Club promotes water safety for everyone, and is proud to offer high quality swimming lessons. We have two highly qualified and trained instructors this season who encourage everyone to be sure your child practices the safety skills they need. Our lessons will focus on not only learning to swim properly, but also on various age appropriate water safety skills and rules that make swimming fun...AND safe! You can find out how about the classes, the instructors, the session dates, fees, and how to register right here, just keep reading! Lessons will begin to fill up quickly as the season draws near, so please contact the instructors to reserve your spot!

We are also proud to announce a NEW option to get educate parents about water safety, and to get our youngest members started early on their water safety skills! A Mommy/Caregiver and Me class will be offered for children ages 8-35 months and their caregivers. This class focuses on teaching caregivers how to instruct their infants and toddlers in learning to swim and water safety skills. Research has shown that children ages 1-4 have the most risk of drowning, and that education and swimming lessons decreases that risk. PLEASE EMAIL ROBYN KONDRAD if you are interested in participating in this class. If there is enough interest, we will open more classes! It's never too early to learn how to enjoy the water with your youngest children while teaching them safety skills.
